How To Install Homebrew On Mac OS

HomeBrew is a very useful package management tool on Mac OS. It can be used to install, update, uninstall, search, and list Mac OS software packages. It makes your work simple and clear. But HomeBrew is not installed on Mac OS by default, you need to install it before using it. This article will tell you how to install and use it.

1. Prerequisites.

  1. Before installing Homebrew, you should make sure your Mac OS matches the below conditions.
  2. Your Mac OS version should be higher than 10.10.
  3. You had better install Xcode on your Mac OS, because Xcode will install some command line tools which is needed.

2. Install HomeBrew On Mac.

  1. Installing HomeBrew on Mac is very easy, just follow the below steps.
  2. Open a terminal and type the below command in it.
    /usr/bin/ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"
  3. Then the installation process will start, you can see it downloads a lot of packages, and when you see the below message, it means the homebrew installation has been completed successfully.
    Already up-to-date.
    ==> Installation successful!
  4. Verify HomeBrew has been installed successfully. Run the command brew help in a terminal, then you can see the below output, which means homebrew has been installed successfully.
    $ brew help
    Example usage:
      brew search [TEXT|/REGEX/]
      brew info [FORMULA...]
      brew install FORMULA...
      brew update
      brew upgrade [FORMULA...]
      brew uninstall FORMULA...
      brew list [FORMULA...]
      ......
      ......
      ......
  5. If you encounter a connection refused error, please read section 4 of this article.

3. Uninstall Homebrew On Mac OS.

  1. Run the below script in the macOS terminal to uninstall homebrew for macOS Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur.
    /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/uninstall.sh)"
  2. Run the below script in the macOS terminal to uninstall homebrew for macOS High Sierra and earlier.
    ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/uninstall)"
  3. If you encounter a connection refused error, please read section 4 of this article.

4. Connection Refused Error Fix.

  1. When you run the above command to install homebrew, you may encounter a Failed to connect to raw.githubusercontent.com port 443: Connection refused error like below.
    $ /usr/bin/ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

    curl: (7) Failed to connect to raw.githubusercontent.com port 443: Connection refused
  2. To fix this error, you can follow the below steps.
  3. Open a web browser and browse URL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install
  4. Then you will get a web page with the below content. The content tells you that the old command has been deprecated and the correct bash command which can install home brew now.
    #!/usr/bin/ruby

    STDERR.print <<EOS
    Warning: The Ruby Homebrew installer is now deprecated and has been rewritten in
    Bash. Please migrate to the following command:
      /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install.sh)"

    EOS

    Kernel.exec "/bin/bash", "-c", '/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install.sh)"'
  5. Run the below correct bash command in the terminal to install homebrew on Mac OS correctly.
    /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"

    or

    /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install.sh)"

  6. If the above command still returns a Connection refused error like below.
    $ /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install.sh)"
    curl: (7) Failed to connect to raw.githubusercontent.com port 443: Connection refused
  7. Then you can browse the URL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install.sh in a web browser and get the below bash script command.
    #!/bin/bash
    set -u

    # First check if the OS is Linux.
    if [[ "$(uname)" = "Linux" ]]; then

  8. Create a local bash file ( ie: install_home_brew.sh ) and copy the above bash script into the local bash file.
  9. Add executable permission to the above bash file ( chmod +x install_home_brew.sh).
  10. Then run the below command in the terminal. Then you can install homebrew on Mac OS successfully.
    /bin/bash -c ./install_home_brew.sh
