How To Install Homebrew On Mac OS

HomeBrew is a very useful package management tool on mac os. It can be used to install, update, uninstall, search, list mac os software packages. It make your work simple and clear. But HomeBrew is not installed on mac os by default, you need to install it before use it. This article will tell you how to install and use it.

1.Prerequisites.

Before install homebrew, you should make sure your mac os match below conditions.

  1. Your mac os version should be higher than 10.10.
  2. You had better install Xcode on your mac os, because Xcode will install some command line tools which is needed.

2. Install HomeBrew On Mac.

Install HomeBrew on mac is very easy, just follow below steps.

  1. Open a terminal and type below command in it.

  2. Then the installation process will start, you can see it download a lot of packages, when you see below message, it means the homebrew installation has been completed successfully.

  3. Verify HomeBrew has been installed successfully. Run command brew help in terminal, then you can see below output, that means homebrew has been installed successfully.
    $ brew help

3. Connection Refused Error Fix.

When you run above command to install home brew, you may encounter a Failed to connect to raw.githubusercontent.com port 443: Connection refused error like below.

To fix this error, you can follow below steps.

  1. Open a web browser and browse url https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install
  2. Then you will get a web page with below content. The content tell you that the old command has been deprecated and the correct bash command which can install home brew now.

  6. Create a local bash file ( ie: install_home_brew.sh ) and copy above bash script in the local bash file.
  7. Add executable permission to above bash file ( chmod +x install_home_brew.sh).
  8. Then run below command in terminal. Then you can install home brew on mac OS successfully.
